Surgenor, who turned 34 in December, joined from his hometown side Ballymena United at the start of the 2015/16 campaign and quickly became a fans’ favourite with his performances in midfield and, in more recent times, at the heart of defence.
His leadership qualities both on and off the pitch saw him don the captain’s armband from the beginning of his second season, which he has deservedly retained since.
Surgenor’s experience and leadership has proved vital at the back for Rangers in the last year-and-a-half, and to date he has made 163 appearances, scoring six times.
On signing on for another season, Mark Surgenor said,
“I am delighted to have signed another contract and I am thankful to the Chairman for offering me this for a further year. The progress we are making, not only as a team but as a Club, has been a massive factor. I want to be part of the Club’s ambitions and feel I owe back to them for showing the undoubted trust in me as a player and Club captain.
I am probably playing as well as I have done in my career and it is because I am content, training is intense but enjoyable and I believe I am still learning, and the players have become more than just teammates. Niall puts an awful lot of emphasis of togetherness from the Chairman down to the youth set-up and stewards at the games and I believe I can help him with this in my role as captain for as long as he wants me here. Amber Army!”
Pleased to retain his skipper’s services, Niall Currie commented,
“We are delighted to have Mark on board for another season. It was an absolute no brainer as he has been outstanding both last season in the Championship and now this season in the Premiership. He is as fit as anyone else at the Club and I see no reason at all why there aren’t many years still ahead of him having only just turned 34.
His value to myself, the coaching staff and all the boys is there for all to see. Foundations have always been the key to build for me and it is great to know that we will have that in place for next season.”
Great to have you on board, Surgy! #AmberArmy
