Surgenor: “We have to go out and attack from the off.”
Carrick Rangers captain Mark Surgenor believes that the ‘Gers must go out and attack today’s game in order to beat Portadown.

His 89th minute header on the final day of last season paved the way for Miguel Chines’ last minute winner to keep the ‘Gers in the league, and now Mark Surgenor again believes that a win is what’s required.

“Today is a massive game, if we win today it puts us closer to Ballinamallard who in my opinion aren’t totally uncatchable.” said the ‘Gers captain. “In the same respect, Portadown will be wanting to win this game to try and catch us which isn’t unrealistic either, so it’s shaping up to be a massive game of huge importance which both teams will be up for.”

The experienced centre-half knows the consequences if his side end up on the wrong side of the result, and knows how the ‘Gers must prevent that from happening, “This is a must not lose game. We must attack from the off and score first and from there we have the basis to go on and win.”

And as always, Surgenor adds just how important the Amber Army can be in pushing the players on in big games. “When you get a goal ahead the crowd gets behind you and pushes you on and it almost seems easier, and if we can get that first goal we can really kick on from there.”
