Dungannon Swifts 2-0 Carrick Rangers
Carrick Rangers’ first post-split game ended with a disappointing result in a 2-0 away loss to 8th placed Dungannon Swifts.

Striker Darren Henderson registered Rangers’ first chance of the afternoon after 20 minutes, with his shot being blocked by centre-half David Armstrong.

‘Keeper Harry Doherty was called into action moments later as he first palmed away Douglas Wilson’s effort before making a brilliant save from point-blank range following Paul McElroy’s shot.

In the final action in the first half, Doherty had to come to his side’s rescue again as he tipped Christopher Hegarty’s header over the bar to ensure that the game was scoreless at the break.

Following the interval, the game took time to get going again, so the Carrick bench moved to introduce Julien Anau in place of Jonathan Smith up front.

However, a minute later the hosts took the lead. Seanan Cluclas rose highest at the back post to head a corner-kick into the corner of the net.

In an attempt to get back into the game, Gavin Taggart replaced Ralph Kottoy in the centre of midfield.

The ‘Gers almost had the equaliser as Paddy McNally connected with an Eamon McAllister free-kick, but the centre-half sent his header wide of the mark.

At the other end, Swifts substitute Ryan Mayse sent a low effort just past the post.

The visitor’s final substitution saw Aaron Smyth make way for Andrew Mooney as Carrick pushed for a goal.

With the game in its final 10 minutes, Cormac Burke came close to doubling his team’s lead as his low shot was tipped past the post by Doherty.

Substitute Anau almost found the equaliser as he cut in from the left and unleashed a low strike towards the near corner which trickled just wide.

On the 89th minute Dungannon sealed the victory with their second goal. A swift counter-attacking move saw Mayse send Burke through one-on-one, and he made no mistake as he fired past Doherty to round off a disappointing day at the office for the ‘Gers.

Carrick Rangers: Doherty; Chapman, McNally, Larmour, Smyth; McAllister, Surgenor, Kottoy, Hassin; J. Smith, Henderson.

Unused substitutes: Edgar, M. Smith.
