The Colts started brightly under difficult conditions with Wakehurst blanketed in a heavy fog and frosty pitch.
Carrick took a deserved lead on 15 mins when Ben Morrison was played through by Lewis Dunwoody. Ben showed his pace and strength to hold off a desperate last ditch tackle and calmly slot home.
Carniny were still in the game however and with the game finely poised at 1 nil Colts keeper Dale Bodles pulled off a magnificent match winning save. With the ball destined for the top corner of the Carrick goal, Dale somehow got his fingertips to the ball to tip it past the post.
Carrick were working hard as a team closing down Carniny and giving them no time to play. They were rewarded for all their hard work on 21 mins. Ben Morrison again causing the home sides defense all sorts of problems and allowing Lewis Dunwoody to stab home the loose ball from close range. 2-0 to Carrick.
Carniny started the second half with a purpose and scored a great goal themselves on 42 mins. A great run forward, a one two and great finish 2-1 Carrick.
The home teams fight back was short lived however when Carrick restored their 2 goal advantage on 48 mins. What can only be described as a wonder strike from Freddie Nicholl from 25-30 yards out straight into the top corner leaving the Carniny keeper stranded. 3-1 Carrick.
Carniny managed to grab another goal on 61 mins to give Carrick a nervous finish to the game. The Colts however were able to see out the remaining 9 mins with some stout defending.
A another fine cup performance from the Colts today especially as they were short on personnel with some of the boys playing out of position. Purdy, Lilburn, Luney and Seymour were solid at the back and defended resolutely. Swann, Jeavons, Hawthorn, Smiley and Nicholl all gave the midfield the perfect balance of attack and defence that has been lacking of late and Morrison and Dunwoody were bright and full of ideas up front causing Carniny all sorts of problems.
Man of the match this week however goes to keeper Dale Bodles. A string of top class important saves allowed his team mates to push on for the win. First half save at 1 nil was as good as a goal. Well done Dale.
Next up the Colts have to replicate their cup form in the league against Apex next weekend. Amber Army!!
