With only two minutes on the clock, the ‘Gers took the lead. Some quick and neat passing play from the hosts culminated in Kelly calmly finding the bottom corner when one-on-one with Swifts ‘keeper Patrick Saunders.
The visitors almost equalised soon after as Ryan Burns turned his man inside the area however he failed to truly test Liam McAuley in the Carrick goal.
Youngster Matthew Mulholland picked out the unmarked Kyle McCauley in the box soon after, but the wing-back sent his header over the bar.
In the final action of the half, Paul McDowell set up new signing Gary Warwick with a chance, but his powerful volley flew over the crossbar, meaning Rangers took only a one goal lead in at the break.
Six minutes into the second half, Nixon nearly added the second however his close-range shot hit the side netting.
Nixon then crossed to find McCauley lurking at the back post but again the defender headed wide of the mark.
On the hour mark, Niall Currie’s side doubled their lead. The ball broke to Kelly on the edge of the area and his shot found the back of the net for his second of the evening.
Substitutions soon followed as Michael Smith replaced Paul McDowell, Mark Surgenor came on for Daniel Kelly and Craig McMillen took the place of Gary Warwick.
The substitutes combined to add the third on 69 minutes as McMillen’s low cross from the left was coolly dispatched into the bottom corner by Smith.
Ten minutes later, Rangers added a fourth. Mulholland’s delivery was met by Nixon who netted his first goal in amber and black colours.
And just minutes later, Nixon notched a second. This time, the ball broke to the exciting forward just outside the area and he unleashed a brilliant volley to give Saunders no chance.
Denver Gage should have added his name to the scoresheet soon after, however he somehow headed wide from McMillen’s cross.
With two minutes of normal time remaining, Smith squared the ball across the face of goal to Nixon who happily tapped-in to complete his hat-trick and send the ‘Gers through to the next round of the Bet McLean League Cup.
