A centre-half, MacKinnon rose through the youth ranks at Linfield before making the move to Rangers at age 16. Having spent the last four seasons in Scotland, the now 20-year-old progressed to the Rangers B side where he had been a mainstay in recent campaigns and has also represented Northern Ireland as a youth international up to Under 21 level.
After leaving Rangers at the end of last season, MacKinnon has joined the ‘Gers as an out-of-contract professional and with his registration completed, including receipt of international clearance, he is eligible for selection ahead of this Saturday’s trip to Loughgall.
On signing for the ‘Gers, Lewis MacKinnon said,
“I’m really happy to be here, I have been training since last Thursday and can’t wait to get started properly now as I’m ready for it. Stuart told me I would get an opportunity here so it’s up to me now to come in and do my thing, prove myself and hopefully I can nail down a spot in the team to play week in, week out.”
Pleased to strengthen his defensive options, Stuart King added,
“I am absolutely delighted to get Lewis on board, he is a big, strong centre-half who has played at a really good level so it’s a great signing for us. He is going to add massive competition to the squad and the other players now know they will have to up their game; we have been carrying a lot of knocks so he will come in and add to us at a good time.”
