Carrick began the match brightly and created several chances during the opening stages. Kyle Cherry forced Aidan Harris into a strong save with a powerful effort from around 20 yards inside the first quarter of an hour. Moments later, Daniel Gibson went even closer when his header from a well-delivered Joe Crowe free-kick beat Harris but struck the crossbar.
The visitors’ positive start was rewarded in the 29th minute. Following a scramble in the penalty area after a Carrick corner, Adam Lecky reacted quickest to drive the ball into the net from close range and give the ‘Gers a deserved 1–0 lead. Carrick thought they had doubled their advantage shortly afterwards when a Danny Gibson cross was turned into the goal by a Coleraine defender following another Crowe free-kick routine, but Gibson was adjudged to be offside.
Carrick maintained good defensive organisation throughout the remainder of the half, limiting Coleraine to few clear opportunities. The 'Gers went in at the break perhaps deserving to lead by more than the one goal.
After the break, Luke McCullough tested Harris from close range following another Crowe free-kick in the opening minutes of the second half, but the keeper was equal to the effort. Coleraine found their response in the 59th minute, however, as Charles Dunne managed to get a touch on the loose ball in the box which ended up in the 'Gers net.
The contest became increasingly physical as both teams battled for control, with fouls and cautions interrupting the flow of play. For a time, Carrick appeared capable of securing a hard-earned point, but Coleraine capitalised on a fortunate series of ricochets in the 84th minute. Jamie McGonigle broke through on goal and finished confidently from around 15 yards to put the hosts ahead.
Chasing an equaliser, Carrick committed players forward, but the push left them vulnerable to a late counter-attack. In stoppage time, Dean Jarvis struck to seal a 3–1 victory for Coleraine.
Carrick Rangers will now look to respond as they return to Taylors Avenue for their final home game before Christmas, against Dungannon Swifts next Saturday afternoon.
