When the final whistle blew at Windsor Park on 16 February 1993, it didn't just signify Carrick Rangers winning the County Antrim Senior Shield, it was like the final piece in the club's rise through the ranks.
By beating Glentoran in a replay (after a 1-1 draw), Carrick had completed a unique treble, winning all three Co. Antrim competitions: Junior Shield (1941/42), Steel & Sons Cup (1961/62, 1967/68, 2014/15), and now the Senior Shield.
The Final had been an end-to-end encounter, full of great entertaining football. Brian Martin had unluckily put the ball into his own net to put the Glens ahead, but a 35-yard howitzer from Davy Montgomery tied the game.
The Replay bettered that for excitement.
A very open game ensued, both sides playing superbly.
Carrick took the lead in the 36th minute. A corner from Montgomery was only half cleared to Pyper, who nodded the ball towards Brian Martin just inside the penalty area. Despite limping heavily from an earlier challenge, Martin collected the ball on his chest before rifling in an unstoppable right-foot volley, eliminating the memory of his own goal in the Final. This was Martin's last involvement in the game, as the injury received just minutes before scoring made it impossible for him to continue.
In the 80th minute, Shiels collected a throw-in from Ferris, before playing in the same player down the right wing. After nut-megging a Glens’ defender, Ferris raced to the by-line before picking out Davy Montgomery twelve yards from goal. The diminutive winger met the ball and blasted it into the roof of the net.
Glentoran went all out to recover the game, and pulled a goal back in the 87th minute, but despite a tortuous period of injury time, the resolute Carrick defence held out until the final whistle.
