Stephen Baxter made 2 changes from the 'Gers last league game, with Paul Heatley replacing Adam Lecky, who was ruled out with a knock and Nathan Gartside returning to the XI after 2 months out, Lorcan Donnelly making way.
The home side made a strong start and looked intent on asserting themselves early on. However, Rangers stayed composed and well organised. Although Larne enjoyed the majority of possession, they struggled to create any clear or meaningful chances.
In the 21st minute, a driven cross from Joe Crowe found its way to Danny Gibson who did well to turn into space before firing a shot past Rohan Ferguson and in off the post to give the Amber Army the lead.
The 'Gers had a chance to extend their lead soon after, a ball over the top was met by the onrushing Paul Heatley, Larne keeper Ferguson came out of his box but Heatley passed him at speed, his shot from a tight angle just passing the upright.
Carrick’s doubled their lead in the 42nd minute. Joe Crowe, who has continued to shine during the Rangers' run of form, finished superbly after another sharp attacking move. Shortly after, Heatley capped a superb half by racing through on goal, sending the ‘Gers into the break with a commanding three-goal advantage.
Having made four changes at the break, Larne responded quickly after the restart as substitute Tiarnan O’Connor converted, sparking renewed belief for the hosts.
With 8 minutes of added time, the tension increased late on when Dan Bent bundled home a second for the hosts, but it proved too late for the Inver Reds. Rangers winning out 3-2, and condemning Larne to a first defeat at Inver Park in 363 days.
Stephen Baxter praised the commitment and quality shown by his players, particularly highlighting the outstanding first-half display and the determination required to withstand sustained late pressure.
Rangers now return to Taylors Avenue aiming to maintain their strong momentum when they welcome Bangor on 28th February, with kick-off at 15:00 GMT.
