Report | Dungannon Swifts 3 - 1 Carrick Rangers

Carrick Rangers hopes of European football ended with a 3-1 defeat at Stangmore Park on Wednesday evening.

Carrick began the game brightly and thought they had won a penalty within the first 10 minutes as Aidan Steele appeared to be tripped by Swifts Sean McAllister, however referee Shane Andrews remained unmoved.

Minutes later another penalty shout, this time for a handball, came from the away side as Paul Heatley had his shot blocked by a defender. Andrews again remained unmoved.

In the 21st minute, Luke McCullough was adjudged to have fouled a Dungannon attacked on the edge of the Rangers penalty box, Leo Alves stepped up to curl the ball just inside the far post, past Nathan Gartside’s outstretched arm.

Ten minutes later, Dungannon broke again with a ball played over the Carrick defence to Sean McAllister. Nathan Gartside, attempting to stop the break, was deemed to have handled the ball outside the box and received a straight red card for his action. Aidan Steele was sacrificed in order for Lorcan Donnelly to take Gartside's place in goals.

Undeterred from being down a man, Carrick levelled the score in the 38th minute through Luke McCullough finishing from close range after a scramble in the six-yard box.

The second half would see Dungannon quickly capitalise on their man advantage in the 48th minute with another fine strike from distance, this time courtesy of Caolan Marron.

Dungannon continued to exploit the extra space on the pitch and in the 70th minute broke through the Carrick defence to add a third. Kealan Dillon was put through on goal and slid  the ball into the bottom corner, passed Donnelly to make it 3-1.

Carrick attempted to find a way back into the game, with Matthew Olosunde denied in the closing stages however the man adcantage proved too much for the 'Gers as their season ended with defeat.

'Gers boss Stephen Baxter was proud of the players efforts throughout the campaign, and thanked the fans and volunteers at the Club for their commitment across the season.

The squad now enjoy a well-earned break before returning for pre-season preparations later this summer, while work continues behind the scenes throughout the off-season for both the management team and the club’s volunteers as preparations continue for improvements both on and off the pitch ahead of the new campaign.
